Important Steps that need to be Followed

The steps that you need to follow while carrying out a DIY upholstered headboard project are the following:

Step 1: Determining the Headboard Shape

The first and the most important step that you need to follow in making an upholstered headboard is determining the shape of the headboard. Post determining the headboard shape, an outline has to be drawn onto the foam core board. Next, the outline has to be scored repeatedly using a good quality craft knife. Continue with the scoring procedure until the outline cuts through the foam board.

Step 2: Cutting the Layers

The fusible fleece should be used for cutting three layers to the headboard dimensions and then the layers have to be aligned onto the foam board. Next, a good quality pressing cloth needs to be placed above the fleece spraying it lightly with some water. Then the fleece needs to be pressed using an iron which will immediately fuse all the three layers.

Step 3: Cutting the Fabric

The headboard fabric should be cut slightly larger in comparison to the foam core. This ensures that the edges of the fabric will easily wrap around the foam board sides and even at the back of the foam board.

Step 4: Pressing the Fabric

The fabric needs to be pressed on the fleece starting from the center and then working out the edges.

Step 5: Fusing the Fabric on the Back of the Board

Fusible adhesive should be ironed onto the fabric edge and after removing the fabric’s protective paper, it should be fused onto the back of the foam board.

Step 6: Covering the Underdone Edges

In order to cover the undone edges of the headboard fabric you need to cut a fabric piece about ½ inch smaller in comparison to the board dimensions. This pieces needs to be fused onto the back of the board as this helps in covering the undone edges of the headboard fabric which is fused in the front as well.

Step 7: Applying the Trim

The trim should be applied on the headboard edges by making use of a glue gun.

Step 8: Fusing Pattern onto the Fabric

The coordinating fabric should be fused with a pattern and for doing this you need to cut out a good pattern. The paper backing has to be removed and the design has to be ironed on the headboard, dust ruffle, pillows and various other accessories.

Step 9: Attaching the Headboard

A hook and loop tape should be used for fastening the upholstered headboard to the wall. Some glue should be applied on the tape and then it should be pressed on the headboard to fasten it to the wall. This will give a very secure bond. These are some small and easy steps that you need to follow in carrying out your DIY Upholstered Headboard project successfully.
